Food waste has become a dangerous habit;buying more than we need, letting fruits and vegetables spoil at home or ordering more than we can eat at restaurants. Each year, about 1/3 of the food produced globally is loss or wasted. In developing countries, a large part of food(40%) is lost at the harvest or processing stage. This is called food loss.
In developed countries, this same percentage (40%) is lost at the consumer or retail stage, throwing away food that is brought at stores or food that is not eaten at home, restaurants or cafeterias. This is called food waste. More people are reported to die from hunger every day than AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis combined. Nearly one third of the food produced in the world is lost or wasted due to one reason or other. Food waste that ends up in landfills produces a large amount of methane, carbon dioxide and chlorofluro carbon absorb infrared radiation and heat up the Earth's atmosphere, causing global warming and climate change is a serious issue. Wasting 1.3 billion tons of food causes huge economic losses and a lot of needless hunger, but there are climate environmental issues deeply connected to a food waste, according to a report from the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization. We have formed habits that hurt our world and put extra strain on our natural resource. But habits can change and needs to be changed. To stop food wastage changes should be made from every stage. We all have a part to play in saving food. An individual should work this eradicate the problem. There are simple and effective ways that everyone can perform to reduce food waste: 1) Shop efficiently: Don't overbuy the food in market. 2) Be smart about food storage: Food can be contaminated if not stored properly and will be wasted. 3) Don't be picky and utilize everything. 4) Date your food: Start putting labels with dates of storage on them so that you won't have to throw it away just because you're not sure if it is edible or not. 5) Don't throw your food away if it is not expired yet. 6) Composting of the wasted food. Food wastage is a serious problem and if changing a simple habit can reduce it to some extent then why not change it. Go green |
