Chenopodium album: a notorious weed but a miraculous medicinal plant. |

Chenopodium album commonly called as Bethau in nepali is afast growing weedy annual plants belonging to the genus Chenopodium. They are the mostly cosmopolitian in distribution through out the tropical region of the world and one of the best successful colonizers with a wide range of pH values. Since chenopodium album is a typical weed of the row crops. Yield reduction is caused by the crop nutrition deficiency, as it strongly competes for light, water and nutrient. It has been recognized as the most important weeds species in European corn field with widespread resistance to triazine herbicides. Bethau seed mostly occurs along with seed of wheat so it has been considered as the major weed of the wheat, rice, buckwheat field etc.
Although it has disadvantages but with a lot of advantages, According to the 2011 study published in the International Journal of Applied Biology and Pharmaceutical Technology, bathau leaves illustrated anti bacteria activities against human pathogenic bacteria including Salmonella, St raphylococcus, Proteus, Pseudomonas. In addition to this the leaves of this plant have hepatoprotective benefits and thus holds potential as a therapeutic agent. It protects the liver from toxicity or hepato toxicity caused by various drugs like paracetamol and toxins, as per 2012 study published in the Journal of Experimental and Integrative Medicine.When prepared as an infusion, it manages hepatic disorders, spleen enlargement, billiousness burns and ulcers. Since it is also beleived to have good amount of irons for enriching it with iron supplement. The leaves of bethau consists more fibers with a various laxative properties, which assists in curing constipation and also acts as blood purifiers as per the book ''Índian Medicine''. Mostly it is one of the most importantly the good source of Vitamin A which helps in curing eye sight problems as well blindness. The leaves consists of 8 essential amino acids such as Tryptophan, Phenylalanine, Methonine, Theonine, Threonine, Leucine, Isoleucine and valine. Along with all these health benefits it has a property of inhibiting the growth of breast cancer cells and called as a key anti breast cancer bioagent as well hypoglycemic agents, Any women with an irregular menstrual cycle can have its leaves for improving in regularity of menstrual cycle also acts like a good aphrodisiac and improve sexual urge in people having low sex drive, medium obesity and secure from cardinal disorder. To sum up, Chenopodium album has some disadvantages with alot of advantages so considered as notorious weed but miraculous medicinal plant. |
