Becoming More Green With Your Kids

As climate change and the amount of trash in the environment continues to increase, the necessity to go green is more important than ever. While making a sustainable Earth for us to live in is one of the biggest reasons to make mindful choices, going green can also lower your monthly utility bills, reduce pollution, and stop global warming. This lifestyle change can also make you a more healthy individual.

According to Environment Insider, the key to making a lasting impact is to impart good, sustainable living habits on our children as well as ourselves. Their motivation and energy help families stick to their goals, but they need our help. Making the change is not as difficult as you think. By simply following the rules of "reduce, reuse, recycle" you can easily find ways to go green with your kids.

Reduce

Reducing the amount of waste you create is a fantastic way to start going green. However, this task can sometimes be difficult for children who do not fully understand the concept. In this case, you will have to be prepared to step in and teach them more eco-friendly methods for everyday activities. Go through your daily itinerary and see what you are using and then see if it could be replaced with a better, more green option.

A few examples include:

1. Teaching your kids to turn off the water and unplug electronics when they are not in use. Even a little bit can add up and make a difference.

2. When they have to bathe, try and get them to use the shower or bath as quickly as they can. You can stage it as a race.

3. Play outside as much as possible. This will get your kids enjoying nature and get them off their electronics.

4. Try and get them interested in reading. Libraries are a better alternative than buying your own books, and it will help their imagination, comprehension, and vocabulary skills.

5.Walk or bike to any close-by destinations. Exercise is a healthy alternative to driving a car. Eating Healthy is also a great way to help the environment and your child's health.

6. When holidays roll around, try and limit the number of gifts you give or forgo gifts entirely. Make the holidays about friends and family, not about material possessions.

There is also a lot of waste that comes with food. For tips on how to limit food waste from seasoned restaurant owners, check out Restaurant Business Online. Their advice can be used in your very own home.

Reuse

Reusing items is a much easier task to follow through on. Most people who have multiple children already know how cost-effective it can be to use hand-me-down clothes and toys. This is a great step in the right direction. You can even choose to get new clothes and toys from thrift stores and toy trade shows. Luckily, kids are more willing to participate in this aspect of recycling, or at least not notice your efforts. As long as they think they are getting something new they will be satisfied.

Conserve Energy Future has a few other suggestions when it comes to reusing.

1. Instead of throwing something out, see if you can fix it. This will help teach your children to be handy. It is an important skill that they can use later in life and it will prolong the life of their toys.

2. Combine hobbies. If something has lost your kid's attention, try adding a new element to it rather than starting over with something new.

3. Don't use plastic. Cloth, metal, and glass will last much longer and can be used multiple times.

4. Get creative. Art is more than just drawing and painting. See what your kids can make with spare parts, collected seashells, and other odd trinkets.

5. Invest in reusable grocery bags. They are a durable option that can be seamlessly integrated into your family's life. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes and can even be used for your child's lunchbox.

Recycle

There will be a point where it is time to replace an item in your home, even if you have done your best to reuse it. The good news is that as technology advances it becomes easier to recycle. However, there are still some materials that can not be transformed back into their raw state and reused. Stay away from plastics that are harder to reuse and will not decompose. Choose paper, cloth, metal, glass, or other nature-friendly materials. It is your job to choose items that can be recycled and teach your kids to do the same. Rewarding them for properly sorting items into recycling bins until they understand the value of their actions is a good way to start.

You can also look into funding projects that are working on creating new, sustainable options. Bioplastics are a new surge within the green community. While these options are being made at a commercial scale, there are at-home options like those found at The Earth Project that can be done at home. It takes a little more time and effort, but it can become a good activity for you and your kids.

Conclusion

Teaching your children to be environmentally friendly is a lesson that will help create a cleaner Earth. There are many options available for you to choose from so you can pick what green aspects will work the best for you and your family. Work together. Be creative and gain their interest by letting them come up with a few ideas on their own. Kids are more likely to follow rules that they helped make. Use rewards to help those less willing to get in the spirit. Also, remember that you are one of their biggest examples. If you are able to stick to a green lifestyle your kids will be able to follow your lead.
