Local Actions And Solutions To Climate Change

A growing number of countries are already suffering significant consequences of climate impacts. If the evidence of global climate change statistics by NASA is anything to go by, then climate change is a worrying phenomenon.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) forecasts a temperature rise of 2.5 to 10 degrees Fahrenheit over the next century. With the escalating effects of global warming such as sudden weather swings and hurricanes, man must find immediate interventions.

The current global warming effects include sudden weather swings, hurricanes, rising sea levels, and change in precipitation patterns.

Climate scientists expound that the current global warming trends are a result of human expansion of the greenhouse effect. This occurs when the atmosphere traps heat radiating from earth towards space. The contributing gases towards the greenhouse effect include carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and water vapor.

Carbon dioxide puts us at the greatest danger of irreversible effects with its continued unabated accumulation in the atmosphere.

Actions On Treaties

Unless the global treaties are acted upon, nations will not reach their long term goals on tackling climate changes. The Kyoto Protocol adopted in 1997 legally binds developed country parties to emission reduction targets.

Similarly, The Paris Agreement was coined with a long term goal to keep global temperature rise below 2 degrees Celsius. These treaties are, however, not fully implemented.

To strengthen the global response to the threat of climate change, governments must abide by these treaties. They should set an example by providing clean sources of energy such as wind and solar energy.

Use Of Technology

Overarching concerns over global warming has increased the need for technological advancements. The use of artificial photosynthesis and perovskite solar cells is a bigger technological advancement to clean energy.

Kenya has set a pace by tapping into wind energy. The last three decades have seen tremendous advancements in wind power projects. This is after fully commissioning the 310MW Lake Turkana wind power, a supplement to the 100MW Kipeto Wind Power.

Geoengineering strategy is an alternative to reducing global warming. According to Harvard University scientists, Stratospheric aerosol injection can be used to offset greenhouse effects. Eventually, this will be a breakthrough revelation to save this choking planet.

The use of climate mobile apps can be adapted to display real-time global satellite data of the planet¡¯s vital signs. NASA¡¯s Earths Now app is a major innovation in displaying real-time climatic data. It is a promising advancement in slowing global warming.

Local Responses

Farmers would now agree that indigenous knowledge is helpful in livestock keeping and crop irrigation. Preservation of pasture requires indigenous knowledge. This is necessary in areas experiencing long dry spells of rain.

After losing 130 heads of cattle due to drought, Matampash, an agricultural solutions expert in Kenya can now smile. He uses his indigenous knowledge to prepare land for pasture conservation. Africa Indigenous Knowledge Systems (AIKS) are crucial to addressing effects of climate change.

Matampash has trained farmers to build traditional rock catchment system to harvest rainwater. With innovative traditional water harvesting techniques, they have become food secure and no longer depend on food aid.

Moreover, ¡°Home dams¡± is a simple way of trapping and storing surface runoff. Farmers in Mbeere, dry land in Kenya, uses the technique to stay afloat as water becomes scarcer. The technique has introduced fish rearing as an alternative to traditional crop growing, thus a major boost to economy.

To improve local responses to climate changes, farmers need education on indigenous climate systems. With sound environmental techniques, the ecosystem will be conserved.

It is the role of every nation to limit their gaseous emissions. More resources should be directed at development, distribution, and use of clean energy. Stringent policies should be implemented to stop the usage of leaded fuels in public service sectors.

When all factors that lead to global warming are put into consideration, man will live in harmony. Therefore, long term solutions to address climate change must be implemented immediately if not now.

    Thank you.
Kenya is also working to exploit oil in turkana and coal in in Kitui and process it in Kitui. which is unnecessary. #CoalSiCoal
