Not even a month passes that countless Ganesha idols are immersed in the water bodies in India in the name of festivity, joy and worship during Ganesh Chaturthi; larger celebrations of the Durga followers further adds to the woes of Indian rivers and the future generations. With due respect to all the religious sentiments attached to the festival of Ganesh Chaturthi and Durga Puja, it is high time we, Indians, give a thought to water pollution caused due to the immersion of idols in water bodies .The POP made idols are full of synthetic colors heavy in metals like lead calcium, magnesium, etc. which through fishes and seafood enter our food chain directly. Infact, although purified through various procedures, the water we consume also gets affected. It also kills the aquatic plants and the marine life, thereby, disturbing the flow of ecosystem. Despite the growing level of awareness on the environmental hazards of Ganesh visarjan, the negative after effects of the festival are still too prominent to be ignored. In a world where we are on the verge of failing the environmental battle, following such environmental hazardous practices blindly cannot be justified in the name of religion and faith. |
