I recent report from the WHO i.e., world health organization, drawing on measurements and calculations as of 2016 from air monitoring station in 4300 cities establishes clearly the air pollution is a global problem. A whooping nine out of ten people on Earth breathe highly polluted air. At a database ranking of particulate pollution in cities, 11 out of 12 cities with highest levels are located in India including the capital of India, Delhi and my city Patna. It is majorly because of increasing population. According to recent world population prospects released by the United Nations, India will be number one in seven years in population. And approximately 181 million people in India are living below poverty line who often use cookstoves, heating fuel, kerosene lighting which all are common souces of pollution in big cities in developing countries. 2-3rds of India's population still lives outside of cities and 80% of these households rely on biomass like wood for cooking and heating. However, in India 10 crore LPG connections given in 4 years, all free to poor women under prime minister's PMUY scheme, Central government.
Increasing number of vehicles is another problem. However, in addition to this on Indian roads still run the buses which are hundered years old with poor system generating harmful gases. Applying air filters to these vehicles can prove to be helpful. On the other hand car pooling is a great idea to reduce air pollution and it can be extended to even bikepooling, etc. Transition of coal toward clean energy sources like solar and wind energy can bring the change.
