First and foremost, I would like to say that if for any reason, you do not eat meat, be it religious or personal, I respect you fully. That is your choice and you have all the right to do so.
For the rest of you guys that love meat such as I, then this article is for you. Meat is delicious. There are endless kinds of meat, and numerous ways on how to cook and prepare them. However, sometimes we forget the environmental impact that these habits of ours has on the world we live in. Today, I will not debate and discuss on the ethics of eating meat, or anything like that. I will not push you to vegan or vegeterian diets. I will, however, give suggestions on possible ways that we can consume meat in a more sustainable and in a more responsible way. The first thing we can do, is to look at labels. Consuming "organic" or "grass-fed" meats can give us a lot of benefits. These, oftentimes, tend to taste better than meat from animals grown in mass farms with artificial feeds and inhumane raising practices. They are, in a sense, just more "natural". They do not use antibiotics or increased doses of manufactured medicine to make animals grow faster for consumption. Connected to this is that we research on who produces the meat that we purchase. Be it from a fastfood, a restaurant, or a supermarket, the Internet is always by our side to help us look for information such as these. We can see the practices of those we buy our meat from, ways used to raise the animals that are then brought to us for consumption. By doing this, we can select the meat that comes from better producers, and shun those that come from sources that do not practice good methods to prepare the meat that we eat. What are the benefits of these? Aside from having better tasting meat products, we help to save our planet by consuming meat that has been produced with sustainable methods. Less pollution, less harmful byproducts will exist if we only become a little more selective with the meat we consume. Generally, responsible meat eating habits can also result in better health for us. As said before, less artificial and harmful feeds for the animals we consume means less harmful chemicals in our own bodies. Who doesn't want good health? And finally, while we do consume animals, we should tolerate and promote those whose practices in preparing our meats are humane and decent. Even though we eat meat, we should still treat our sources with respect and decency. Having said all this, we should now be aware on what to do to help promote sustainable and responsible meat production and consumption. Let me know in the comments thread what your thoughts are! |
