Due to climate change, various adverse effect have been observed in the agriculture of Nepal.Small peasants in Nepal have largely identified the climate variation as responsible for declining crop and livestock production in Nepal. The subsistence farming economy is affected due to change in the reliability of stream flow and erratic monsoon rainfall, and the impacts of flooding.Decline in rainfall from November to April adversly affect the winter and spring crops.Decline in food production has threatened to the food security of people.Increase in temperature have impacted in the change in timing intensity, volume of rainfall and rising in carbon dioxide level.Flood has increased year by year and taken lives, destroyed physical structures and deposited sediments on agricultural land. The drought has been another phenomenon of climate change and has affected both winter and summer crops.Since only limited land has irrigation facility, agriculture production is highly dependable on favorable weather conditions, mainly on the monsoon timing and availiability of rain water .
Climatic variability has resulted into shifts in agro-ecological zones, prolonged dry spells, and higher incidence of pests and diseases.Extreme climatic condition has fed to increased incidence of fire in recent years and loss of large areas of protected forest land. This situation makes the agriculture sector most vulnerable to climate change in Nepal.
