Nepal's first step in mitigation of plastic pollution

by Milan Regmi | 06-06-2018 00:07 recommendations 0

Bijan shrestha, a student of food technology has succeded in developing bioplastic in his thesis study.
Extract(starch) from maize variety 'Junelo' was used which is biodegradable. Australia was the first country in producing biodegradable plastic and using it in various products. It is now widely used in some developed countries as outercovering of choclates & sweets as it is edible. Starch incorporated with edible chemical i.e. glycerold would make plastic soft, tender, flexible and easy in transportation too.In period of time, microrganisms act on this plastic and can be easily degradable.
Furthermore, this starch (glucose polymer) can also be extracted from potato, rice, wheat kernel, colocasia etc. Nepal in adopting this initiative can take time but with time and people's consiosness towards environment, it would surely be totally adopted.Though it is 2-10 times cosltly than normal plastic, it can play a great role in making clean and green environment.

Cool. Hopefully, everywhere in the world would produce biodegradable plastic as a way to create a green environment.
