SMALL BRIEF OF POOR SANITATION IN GHANA

Ghana our beloved country is faced with a lot of challenges, but among all poor sanitation has exposed this country. It looks as if the institutions and the people who are put in place to solve these problems are either not serious or not capable. the management of solid waste remains a huge challenge for Ghana. For many years, we have failed as a country to deal with the increasing rate of poor sanitation which started some years ago. Looking at the capital town of Ghana, about Only 77.5% of homes have toilets. Only 30% have flush toilets. The average person in Accra has to share toilets with 10 or more persons in public latrines. Lack of plumbing has led to huge amounts of water being dumped on the streets. There is a lack of information to the public about how diseases spread because of germs and poor sanitation. In 2008 over 700US million dollars was spent on treating malaria in Ghana. That figure has not slowed down. Malaria is the number one health problem all over Ghana, especially in Accra, the capital town of Ghana. Ghana had been ranked second after Sudan in Africa for open defecation, with five million Ghanaians not having access to any toilet facility.
The country has also been performing poorly with sanitation coverage of only 15 percent, making the practice of open defecation a key sanitation challenge because people do not have access to key basic facilities.
The poor sanitation issues has cost the country $79million a year and also posed the greatest danger to human health , particularly for the most vulnerable, including young children. The institution must work effectively, that is the only way we can realize our dream of being like America, Europe, Asia etc.We have to educate ourselves to know the bad effect of poor sanitation.
