Houston Underwater: Trump Administration Taking a Step Back from Flood Readiness

by Aldrin Aujero | 30-08-2017 20:23 recommendations 1

Even after the devastating catastrophe that Hurrican Harvey brought to Houston, the Trump administration still chose to decrease its efforts in flood mitigation.

To borrow the words of commander Jim Lovell, "Houston, we have a problem.", big problem. Huge.
 ...

The Trump administration has rescinded, two week prior to typhoon Harvey, the Federal Flood Mitigation Standard. This standard requires government infrastructure projects to "do more planning for floods" with precautions such as elevation, and structural integrity in order to mitigate the damages in the event of a flood.

This standard, passed under the Obama adminstration, was aimed to decrease the amount of money spent by municipalities in rebuilding and reconstruction and instead focus on lasting infrastructures that would stand the test of time. Obama certainly had a long-term vision in implementing this standard. But Trump doesn't.

Opinion writers from Vox assert that the only benefit of rescinding this standard is that Trump would loosen the regulations for infrastructure contractors and hopefully win more conservative "points" in doing so.

However, Trump's political interests does come at a cost. Typhoon Harvey had had devastating effects in Houston. And because of the standard's rescencion, Houston no longer has to consider planning for future calamities, which makes itself exceptionally exposed to various forms of calamities brought by typhoons. No longer would projects be reviewed on a careful basis. Instead, projects would be executed at lower costs reserving more profits for the private companies that are contracted.

Trumpnomics seems to have revealed itself even more blatanly in this recent development. Perhaps, however, it is time for us to consider relying less on the government and more on pro-active actions taken by concerned parties such as us, the youth.

However, we must not get impatient with the current direction of the world and do our part for change instead.

In the words of Kendrick Lamar himself,

"Everything evens up, just you wait, even a trash can gets its steak."
