Against Climate Skepticism: 3 Essential Pointers in Arguing Effectively |

It is imperative for all of us youth advocates to be effective in communicating the idea of environmentalism/sustainability. However, not everyone accepts the basic premises that we all do. Not everyone is an environment enthusiast. In fact, there are many that are quite the opposite. We must always be open to the thinking of others, however, we must remain firm in our belief of the things that are empirically proven by science and are thus undeniably facts. So, what are we to do when we are confronted by such people who oppose environmentalism? Well, to a lot of people, talking about polar issues such as the environment is disconcerting. However, it is possible to sound more effective, logical and rational. Here?s how: Establish the premises below before proceeding to anything else.
A lot of conservative leaning people would argue that global warming is caused by natural phenomenons such as the increasing water vapour in the air or the sun. Never concede! Greenhouse gases have been proven by a substantial body of research that it causes global warming. 2. Humans are responsible for greenhouse gases. Again, a lot of people would blame other factors such as increased volcanic activity. But even if that were true, the amount of greenhouse gases produced by humans by means such as machines, factories, automobiles, and breathing far overweigh any natural events that emit greenhouse gases. 3. The Antarctic does not disprove climate change. Many climate skeptics tend to draw on the evidence of the increasing ice sheets in the Antarctic as an evidence to claim that climate change is actually improving. However, the ice losses from the Arctic region far outweigh the gains in the Antarctic. As a matter of fact, climate scientist claim that the gains in the Antarctic sea ice levels is precisely a result of climate change as temperatures in the region drop below what is considered average. After establishing these facts, makes sure to connect all the ideas and lead to a convincing conclusion on why climate change does exist and why stopping it is necessary. However, not all the times will you succeed establishing all three above. In this case, it will still be possible to stick with what both of you have agreed upon and build on from their. But, when confronted with someone, who is only arguing for the sake of arguing, that is someone who is blinded by pride, ego, and Trump?s marketing, it would be best to avoid arguing.
