Plastics, The Environment, and Donald Trump |

It is widely accepted that plastics cause a lot of harm towards the environment. In the Philippines for example, the government has been implement a law that makes supermarkets charge additional fees to their customers who don?t have their own eco-friendly bags and instead uses plastic bags. The idea behind this is to deter consumers from relying heavily on readily available plastic bags from supermarkets. And it has been working so far. Unlike the Philippines and many other nations, however, the United States seems to gearing towards the other direction as the Trump administration announced this Wednesday (August 16, 2017) that it revokes the ?Water Bottle Ban? that was passed under the Obama administration in 2011. This law apparently allows national parks and government agencies to ?prohibit the sale of plastic bottles? (https://www.nps.gov/orgs/1207/08-16-2017-water-bottles.htm), and rescinding this law sends a loud reverbrating message across the globe of America?s intention in environmentalism. Many claim that the beverage industry is behind this elaborate scheme to rescind the act while others say that this is part of Trump?s attempt to delete the entire legacy and history of President Obama. While this may boost America?s sales of beverage, it certainly won?t bode well for its streets come the season of hurricanes and storms. Despite all the negative attitude of the United States recently with regards to the environment, we as responsible citizens must realize that we can no longer rely on bandwagoning with the most trendy-trend of environmentalism. We must continue to advocate for the planet regardless of who?s with us. |
