Home garden in Nepal

A home garden is a micro environment composed of multiple, multi stored and multi purpose garden close to homestead(Hodgkin,2002). A home garden refers to the traditional land use system around a homestead, where several species of plants are grown and maintained by household member and intended for family consumption.

Home garden helps to meet the need of local people, year round availability of fresh fruits and vegetables, saves money, increases self reliance and provides access to low cost sources of vitamins and minerals. Principle of home garden deals with increasing biodiversity, organic agriculture, use of low cost management techniques, integrated management, multilayer and mix cropping and utilization of local resources.

Home garden are best suited in the context of Nepal. In Nepal, 72% of households have home gardens. Home garden, locally known as Ghar Bagaincha are neglected from research and development because of their small size but plays an important to maintain local crop diversity. It is mainly suited in the rural areas of Nepal. Reasons for best suitability of Home garden in Nepalese context are:
1.Small land area(0.6 ha land per household in average in Nepal) is properly utilized.
2.It is an low input agriculture technique which can be afforded by poor farmers.
3.It contributes to food security and livelihood of farming communities.
4.It involves the involvement of women and other family members.
5.It provides chance of income and saves from purchase.
6.It helps to maintain the local biodiversity.
