NATURE'S NURTURE

by Anishka Jha | 25-07-2017 21:55 recommendations 0

Nature is the natural environment which surrounds us, cares for us and nourishes us every moment. It provides us a protective layer around us to prevent from the damages. It is the most precious and valuable gift to us from God to live our life here on earth. Nature makes our life easy by providing all the required resources for daily living. We should be thankful to nature for helping, caring and nurturing us like a mother. There are four main components that make up nature. They are, soil, oceans, mountains and rainforests.

Soil is a vital part of the natural environment. It is just as important as plants, animals, rocks, landforms, lochs and rivers. It influences the distribution of plant species and provides a habitat for a wide range of organisms.

Oceans are the lifeblood of planet Earth and humankind. They flow over nearly three-quarters of our planet, and hold 97% of the planet's water. They produce more than half of the oxygen in the atmosphere, and absorb the most carbon from it. The sheer number of people who use and depend on the ocean, and the sometimes unwise practices we adopt, have created problems such as over harvest of resources, reduction in biodiversity, and degradation of marine habitats and species, among others. We risk the very ecosystems on which our survival depends.

Mountains have an extremely important role in influencing global and regional climates and weather conditions. They cover around one-quarter of the earth's land surface and are home to 720 million people around the world. Indirectly, billions more living downstream also benefit from mountains. Mountains provide us with freshwater, energy, food, biodiversity, and medicinal products resources that may become very rare in the coming decades.

Rainforests are not just marvelous storehouses for carbon from the atmosphere. They also safeguard human beings at the eco-system level against flood and drought, affects rainfall frequencies, steadies soil, and most of all rainforests are home to variety of plants, animals and native people. The Amazon rainforest, effectively feeds an agricultural economy of 240 billion dollars-worth in Latin America. Sixty percent of medicines were found first as molecules in a rainforest. At the species level, bees play an important role in conserving our eco system. People are highly dependent on honey bees which are worth $14.6 billion to the agricultural industry. Seeds, nuts, berries and fruits that we eat come from honey bee and insect-based pollination. Unfortunately, industrial agriculture is leading to rainforest loss worldwide. Youth and environmentalists groups today must come together to stop the deforestation of our beloved rainforests.

Right from getting food for themselves, feeding their cattle and goats with fodder or collecting fuel wood from the forest for cooking, humans are connected to nature for its forest reserves and eco systems services. More than 500 million people living in the developing world in poor countries are dependent on coral reef species and ocean fisheries for their livelihood.

Nature has been feeding all species for years and it has never charged us. Since nature has never asked for its property rights its value is not recognised. Economists want to put a price tag on nature in order to stop further loss to it while environmentalists want to protect the intrinsic value of nature for its own sake. How we choose to live with nature each day, whether we regard its value or disregard it, that does not affect the nature but our actions will determine our future.

It is important to live in balance with nature instead of trampling upon it for our vested interest. To quote Fredrick Keonig, "We tend to forget that happiness and peace do not come as a result of getting something we don't have but rather of recognizing and appreciating what we do have."
