Land slide on Muglin-Narayanghat highway and solutions to it |

Dry landslides on the hills along the Narayanghat-Muglin road section which is currently undergoing repair have been a great threat to vehicles as well as pedestrians. Most of the pedestrians and vehicles are being troubled by dry landslide near Mugling. Vehicular movement are being obstructed the whole day. The landslide along the road has been causing a great damage to many lifes and vehicles. The government has ensured that all the measures to clear the debris is being done as fast as possible. But still a permanent solution to this problem is bot being fetched. Currently, vehicular movement on the road section is halted for six hours a day everyday. Workers and technicians of the project climb up to 40 to 50 meters up the hills to remove rocks and soil which can cause landslides. It is expected to take five to six more days to complete the work. Last year, the road section was hit by landslides in the rainy season but this year landslides have started before the arrival of the rainy season. Two persons were killed and five vehicles were buried in dry landslides at Ghumaune on April 3. On Friday, a person fell 150 meters down the road after being hit by a falling stone at Char Kilo. According to District Police Office, Chitwan, the person was safely rescued at around 10 pm and sent to Bharatpur for treatment. The immediate use of bio-engineering method to solve this issue is needed. Bio-engineering method is the use of living plants to create a strong framework and prevent landslide along the slopes. Some of the methods that can be apllied in this slopes are listed below: 1) Grass planting: Planting of seeds or rhizomes of grasses like Amriso, kans, khair, narkat and napier along the slopes helps to decrease the impact of rain water and increases the anchorage of soil. 2) Brush-layering: A layer of woody cutting should be planted along the contour that acts as bio-terracing and reinforces the slope. 3) Hedgerow plantation : It involves planting of trees, shrubs and grases like epil-epil, Napier, Kimbu and others along the paired row as contour. 4) Rip-rap: It includes stone pitching along the slopes and planting of grasses like Napier in between the spaces of the stones. 5) Jute netting: Jute net bags filled with stones, saw dust and soil is placed along the slopes with the help of stakes and are enforced with grasses. So this are some measures to stop this land slideand hope they are implemented soon. |

Seeing this article i remembered my article on the same topic which i posted a year ago during my long run way to university.
Its a very sad story to us that still the situation isnot improving and getting more worst. So Prayash stay positive and lets not loose hope, we need to pinch government as much as we could to solve the problem.

Thanks Prayash for highlighting this topic. I believe that the root cause of dry landslides is deforestation. Bio Engineering or simple tree planting so that the roots can prevent the soil from loosening, will help a lot in preventing such landslides and the damage caused due to them.

Indeed Arushi this measures are the cheapest and easiest one. Hoping that they will be implemented soon.

Landslides are indeed very dangerous and risky for the residents in the areas close to hills. Good to know that such bio-engineering methods can be used to prevent landslides. Hope these or other preventive measures are implemented in vulnerable areas. Thanks for sharing.
