#WorldEnvironmrntDay |
---|
The World environment day 2017 (WED 2017) was celebrated on the theme: connecting people to nature by rediscovering the value of nature- in the city and on land, from the poles to the equator. The theme did prompt us to get outdoors and into nature, to appreciate its beauty and its importance and to take forward the call to protect the earth we share. For my part as the Samsung/UNEP tunza Eco generation regional ambassador to Ghana and the chief volunteer of Alliance for Environmental Intervention, I joined hands with a few friends to speak on the WED 2017 theme to students of the Adawso R/C basic school, where the students were urged to act as first degree stewards of the environment and take action in their respective homes to ensure we collectively build a favourable and more welcoming and serene environment. After this all informative and interactive admonishment on the theme, we decided to take forward the call to protect the earth we share as suggested in the theme by engaging the students in planting 50 trees in and around the school, 20 bead plants 20 acacia species and 10 Ache apples were planted. Our choice of this school for WED celebration was after we were called upon by the headmaster of the school to help establish some more trees in the school since the already existing ones were very old and posing threats, especially when there are storms, and for this reason they were bringing them down, which prompted the decision to replace them even ahead of time. The school also seems to be having a challenge with erosion, for which reason we had to strategically position these plants in such ways that they could contribute to reducing the level of runoff on the school campus when they are fully grown. It was very fulfilling at the end of the day when the staff and students of the school showed much appreciation for our time with them and also asked us to keep getting in touch to enlighten them constantly. But on the other side, we were challenged with funding to fence all these trees we planted since the cost for fencing a single plant was very high. Apart from my earlier engagement with the students, I also spoke on three different radio stations (Accra fm, Obrempong fm and Radio Tamale) to discuss some suggestions I made in a press release I issued as the executive director of Alliance for environmental intervention on the need for Ghana to reconsider reclaiming and developing all lands which has been destroyed through illegal mining activities into economically viable centres like eco centres, renaturation sites, virgin forests, and agricultural lands among others.
