Climate change: a striking challenge to agriculture

by | 21-02-2017 12:52 recommendations 0

Being an agricultural student, its well known to us that the most challenging aspect to agriculture seen in present condition is the climate change.

Climate change and agriculture are interrelated processes, both of which take place on global scale. Climate change affects agriculture in number of ways including changes in average temperature, rainfall and climate change extremes changes in atmospheric carbon dioxide and ground level ozone concentrations, changes in nutritional quality of foods and changes in sea level.

Climatic change is already affecting agriculture with effects unevenly distributed across the world so it is nearly sure seeing present condition that future climatic change will negatively affect crop production which will eventually increase risk of food insecurity especially for vulnerable groups such as poor, marginalized community. For each plant variety, there is optimal temperature for vegetative growth, reproductive growth, maturity of seed etc. but due to climatic change this optimal temperature has not maintained which affects the yield of crop.

Despite technological advancement, such as improved varieties , genetically modified organism and irrigation system ,  still soil and climatic condition or we can say temperature , being an inseparable term of crop production , affects agriculture directly. The climatic change affects agriculture in several ways-

1.   Decreases productivity by decrease in quality and quantity of crops.

2.   Loss of cultivable land due to loss of fertility status of soil.

3.   Adaptation of organisms like microbes becomes difficult which also affects agriculture production.

Thus, we know agriculture is the source of life to us as it provides food for us to survive. So, main cause of climate change, global warming, we should look for ways to reduce it. The main cause of global warming is accumulation of CO2 and harmful gases like carbon monoxide, nitrous oxide, Sulphur etc released from automobiles, factories, industries, etc.
