Nepal is highly vulnerable to climate change. Even though Nepal contributes very minor amount of GHG(0.025%), still it is highly affected by climate change. The fragile ecosystem and lack of adequate technical and mechanical resources are the main causes of such vulnerable status of Nepal. The impacts of climate change has already been seen in Nepal. The mean annual increase in temperature has been found to be 0.06 degree Celsius. The glaciers are melting, rice cultivation is being possible in the cold himalayas, mosquitos and other epidemics are rising upwards and many others. This is just a simple outline, the situation is getting worse day by day. Regarding all this Yesterday, I participated in a 1 day seminar held in my college with the main theme of "Climate Change, Agriculture and Nepal". The programme proved to be highly beneficial. It was conducted in three sessions. After the formal start of the programme the first session was started. All the sessions were held by the Professors of IAAS. The first session was concerntrated on the impacts of climate change on pollinators like honeybee. It focused on points like how pollinators have huge impacts on agriculture and how the increasing temperature and the change in climatic pattern is affecting food production. The decline in the population of pollinators is being a major cause of food scarcity all over the world. The second session was based on Climate change and its impacts of Nepal. This focused on how climate change is affecting Nepal and its economy. The impacts seen and the ways to mitigate it were discussed. The third and final session focused on GMO and environment. It focused on the introduction of GMO, its advantages to the modern world for solving the problem of food insecurity along with its demerits. After all this a final discussion was held among the participants on topics like " Nepal and GMO", "Ways to mitigate climate change" and "Ways to compensate climate change". All the participants were divided into three groups and they were assigned the topic. The views of every group was presented in the end of programme. |

Congratulations Prayash on attending the seminar. Climate change is indeed a problematic issue. Here in Kenya, we're having the same issues as you are in Nepal. Our highest mountain, Mt. Kenya, lost all its ice caps. Our seasons have changed and we're currently experiencing a prolonged drought. Before the drought we had prolonged heavy floods. Because of the floods and the drought, we're having a food crisis as well as a water crisis. Agriculture is the backbone of our economy so you can guess that our economy is not looking good right now. Additionally, temperatures are at an all time high and many people are suffering from heat flashes and sun burns. Overall, the situation is not looking good. Ironically, Kenya is home to UNEP. I'm hoping the situation gets better (we're working towards that). I hope the situation gets better in Nepal too.
