Impact of Climate Change in Agriculture and Food Security

by | 28-01-2017 16:25 recommendations 0

Nepal still has one-third of population below poverty level and still around 4 million people suffer from food shortages. Every year parts of mid-western and far western hills of Nepal, the Karnali region, suffer from food scarcity. Besides limited arable land, poor technology, harsh climate, and poor infrastructure, now climate change has also affected agricultural productivity of these areas. People in other parts of the world such as sub-Saharan Africa are also suffering similar situations and fate. Climate change has further exacerbated the problem, both at home and internationally. Across the globe, natural resources are deteriorating, ecosystems are stressed and biological diversity is being lost. Climate change poses an added threat to global food production. Vulnerability to food insecurity is also on the rise because of climate change. The rising temperature and emission of carbon dioxide to some extent is helpful in production of major crops. For example, increase in agricultural production by enhancing photosynthetic process, shortening physiological process and soil microbial activities. However, due to increase in respiration, there is reduced grain filling period, increase in insect pest population, desertification, increase in soil erosion, transpiration and cause malnutrition in the world overflowing with food due to reducing protein and decrease in mineral content in different crops. Nepal being a least developed country is moving towards vulnerable situation due to climate change. As it is known, its effects cannot be completely controlled but effective planning and change in human habit towards a lower carbon economy can slower down possible disasters. Increase in temperature and carbon dioxide level is also threatening to bring hidden-hunger problem in human by lowering essential nutrient content in food crops.

You and your friends can form a group and start planting trees where possible. It will enhance the other youths. At first make your own locality green. Then go to another one, make it green. Thus spread your efforts. :)
