Contribution of Youth in Agriculture and Food Security

by | 30-01-2017 23:05 recommendations 0

Youth are the future of the world. The participation of young people in agriculture is essential for all the likely solutions to food insecurity. But youth face constant obstacles while engaging in agriculture. Lack of capital, land, technology, knowledge, and market broadly summarizes the major hurdles. It is essential for youth to create new ideas, work on them, and reap benefits of them. The contribution of youth in food security can be ascertained through some of these programs that I am discussing here. First of all, knowledge and information to youth is key for their participation in the agricultural sector. Agricultural education and training must reflect the needs of the agricultural labor market and enhance the familiarity of young women and men with the world of work, including its practical challenges and rewards. For instance, community wide mass media programs through radio, television, and mobile devices on crops, diseases affecting them, weather data like rainfall, fertilizer requirement, pest control, and others can be one of them. Engaging youth in this kind of information sharing platforms empowers them with vital knowledge on agriculture. Next, for sustainable agriculture and rural development, following contributions can be made by youths: agro-enterprise development and management which aim to encourage youths in rural areas to pursue professional career in agriculture and set up their own farm business establishment of school garden so that students learn about nutrition improvement, environment awareness and food production from farm to table. Also, young literate women from farming families can be trained to improve farming, and in male dominated societies, training like these could empower them. Free online training courses can help youth to detect local solutions to their agriculture related problems. Moreover, we can initiate youth programs to enhance skill of young farmers and organize various start-up businesses to encourage agriculture and food practices. In addition to knowledge of agricultural production and processing techniques and the relative know how, young farmers need access to information about finance, land and markets. The capacity of service providers should be built and innovative integrated training methodologies should be explored. In order to improve the quality of education and to attract youth to the agricultural sector, youth should be directly linked to business partners and they should be given hands-on experience.
