¡°We are the first generation to feel the effect of climate change and the last generation who can do something about it.¡± - Barack Obama, Former US President
With this powerful quote, I start this report on Youth Engagement in Climate Action & Justice. On our planet we face hundreds of crises but one of them is grave enough to be called an existential crisis, an existential risk for every Human, Animal and Plant, but deep down, Let's ask ourselves, who is responsible for this? who can mitigate this? who can save the world from this? Only one word comes to mind, doesn't it? HUMANS? In the face of these challenges, youth-led initiatives have demonstrated remarkable impact. For instance, the Fridays for Future movement, inspired by Greta Thunberg, mobilized millions of students globally, leading to substantial policy changes in several countries. In the United States, the Sunrise Movement, driven primarily by young activists, successfully pushed for the Green New Deal, advocating for a shift towards renewable energy and a greener economy. These examples underscore the transformative influence of youth activism on worldwide policymaking. The influence of youth-led projects is not limited to the streets; it is also changing business boardrooms and policy environments. Through their interactions with legislators, young activists have forced governments to embrace renewable energy, enact aggressive climate legislation, and pledge to become carbon neutral. In addition, companies are being forced to reconsider their policies as a result of youth's tireless activism. The need for morally and environmentally sensitive goods and services has prompted many to invest in sustainable technologies, cut emissions, and adopt environmentally friendly corporate practises. Our unwavering commitment as Youth activists is a ray of hope as we traverse an uncertain future. Their boldness in defying convention and their unshakable faith in a better world inspire the worldwide fight for climate justice. We must encourage these young leaders' projects, raise their voices, and incorporate sustainable practises into our own lives as people, communities, and nations. By working together, we can make climate action a shared commitment rather than just a requirement, ensuring a better, greener, and more egalitarian future for all. |
