The importance of protecting our environment is dwindling in the Giant of Africa, Nigeria. The struggle for survival and recent surge in the economy of the country has made her citizens neglect nature.
In February 2015, while on my way to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the airline was appreciating its customers for using their service. They announced to plant a tree on behalf of each passenger on board to combat climate change. On my way back they only told us thank you without making a promise of planting a single tree, right there I told myself – Nigeria would be developed by Nigerians. The trees would be planted in Ethiopia and not Nigeria. This attempt caught my attention and stirred up my desire to do something in the light of that. As soon as I returned to my country, I started massive advocacy and distribution of tree seeds to combat erosion and climate change systematically
To celebrate the World Environmental Day 2016 event, I sourced for 12,000 Khaya senegalensis seed from the University of Ibadan Botanical Garden, Oyo State, Nigeria. We organized Youth assemblies in Ekiti State, Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory and at four Local Counsel Development Areas of Lagos State through my organization, Voluntary Service Overseas VSO Nigeria, where I gathered 3,115 youth together from June 1st to 22nd 2016, trained them on the value and importance of the environment, the reasons why the environment should be protected, and our future unknown that our children would live in through trainings, advocacies, peer education, awareness raising, resources development and increase knowledge of civic responsibilities, thereby strengthening the capacity of young people to participate at the national and international fora as global citizens thereby contributing to SDG 11 and 13 on sustainable cities, communities and action climate, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels and making more youth attracted to public service through promotion of civil internships and volunteering.
Waste is being disposed recklessly in the country, causing diverse environmental havoc, the trainings and advocacy was on reusing these waste to tackles environmental menace such as pollution and the depletion of the ozone layer.
I distributed over 11,000 Khaya senegalensis tree seeds through the children, youth, youth organizations, community based organizations and higher institutions in order to control erosion, control environmental menace and fight ozone layer depletion which are all pushing our wildlife?s into extinction gradually. On the 5th of June, I was interviewed on CORETV News about the celebration of World Environmental Day in Nigeria. On the 24th of July, I sent thousands of Khaya senegalesis seeds to support Environmental Sustainability campaign in Edo state.
