Earth Hour 2016 in Yogyakarta, Indonesia

WWF Indonesia held an Earth Hour event that is located at Borobudur temple and Prambanan temple in Central Java, with the theme "Shine Light On World Heritage Sites to Climate Action."

Since the Earth Hour 2016 is being held in the two world heritage temples, I was interested in attending the event that is far away from Jakarta my hometown.

On Saturday, March 19, 2016, I flew to Yogyakarta by plane whilst being accompanied by my mother. When arriving at Yogyakarta, we instantly headed to Prambanan Temple while considering the distance to the temple from the airport is not so far. After arriving at Prambanan Temple, we realised that the Earth Hour event was not held there, but it was held at Borobudur Temple. We are disappointed by the information that was given for the Earth Hour Event 2016.  It was not possible for us to go to Borobudur Temple considering the time and distance.

In the end we tried searching for another Earth Hour event 2016 in Yogyakarta city through Twitter Earth Hour Yogya. We got a Black Out Hour event at Sheraton Mustika Yogyakarta. When we decided to go there, it turned out that the event was for invitation only and the guests staying in the hotel. We asked permission to the Head of Committee for joining the event because we did not have the invitation letter nor stayed at the hotel. With a great heart, he allowed us to join the event and put us in the VIP row.

The event was started at 08.00pm, Indonesia's west time, starting with opening ceremony including opening speech from several important people.  The event was attended around 50 people.

At 08.30pm sharp, the light black out started.  The 60 sign torch was burned and lit for 60 minutes.  At the same time, all lights at the hotel were turned off including all lights in the guest rooms.  The hotel provided candles and flashlights to replace the electricity lights in every guest rooms.

Under the light from the torches, there were a lot of attractions, such as traditional dances, a fire dance, a theatrical performance, and also an Acoustic Band from the hotel employee association. The participants were also provided traditional food such as boiled corn, roasted sweet potatoes, marinated tofu, and traditional wedang secang drink. They were so yummy.  I loved it.

From that Earth Hour 2016 event, it was recorded that the hotel could reduce more than 1.500 Kwh on the electricity consumption.  I am thinking that if all hotels in Indonesia participate to the Earth Hour Event, it must be millions Kwh of electricity consumption could be saved within 60 minutes.

In the Sunday morning on March 20, 2016, my mother and I flight back to Jakarta.  I was very happy with the Earth Hour Event 2016 at the hotel Sheraton Yogyakarta though I could not attend the biggest event in Borobudur temple.
