Greenhouse gases emission: a major problem

by | 10-02-2016 03:35 recommendations 0

Greenhouse gases are gases that trap heat in atmosphere and cause global warming. The main greenhouse gases are carbondioxide, water vapour, nitrous oxide, methane, ozone, chloroflurocarbons.  Human activities are solely responsible for almost all the greenhouse gases emission. The main sources of greenhouse gas emissions are due to the burning of fossil fuels like coal, oil, natural gases for transport, heat and electricity along with increasing deforestation and soil erosion. These greenhouse gases emitted by various activities are:
  • Carbondioxide- It is principally emitted by burning fossil fuels like coals, petrols, diesels, natural gases used in industries, transport. Deforestation, land clearing for agriculture result in increasing CO2  in atmosphere.
  • Methane- Agricultural activities, wastes, energy use, burning biomass result its emissions.
  • Nitrous oxide- Use of fertilizers are primary source of N2O emissions and biomass burning can also emit it.
  • Fluorinated gases- Industrial processes, refrigeration and other consumer products emit F-gases like hydrofluorocarbons(HFCs), Perfluorocarbons (PFCs) and sulfur hexafluoride (SF6).
The major effect of greenhouse gases is global warming. Apart from it, it also causes climate change, ozone layer depletion, ocean acidification, smog pollution, changes to plant growth and nutrition levels.
  • Global warming is the most critical environmental issues which results desertification, increase melting of snow and ice, increase sea levels, strong storms and other natural calamities. The flooding of glaciers in Himalayas. A 2013 study by team led by Nepali scientist at University of Milan found some glaciers of Nepal on or around Mt. Everest had shrunk by 13% in last 50 years with snow line 180 metres higher than 50 years ago. These glaciers are disappearing at faster rate.
  • Ocean acidification is increasing due to industrial revolution. These ocean serves as sink for all these gases which absorbs quarter of human CO2 emission and result carbonic acid and thus acidity of ocean increases.
  • Experiment tells that when CO2 concentration increased by 50%increased crop growth by around 15%. But when its concentration is maximum, other nutrients that plants need like nitrogen, phosphorus will be deficit. It results nutritional quality of plants to decline for example, protein concentration level in wheat, rice, barley, potato tubers decreased by 5-14%
  • Long term ozone exposure has been found to reduce life expectancy like cardiopulmonary deaths. Recent studies estimate that the global yields of stable crops like soyabean, maize, wheat are being reduced by 2-15 % due to present ozone exposure.
Greenhouse gases effects can be solved by applying 3R (reduce, reuse, recycle) in our life. Alternative sources of energy like solar energy, wind energy, hydroelectricity should be encouraged instead of fossil fuels which are non-renewable sources of energy. Use of filters in industries should be made compulsory before emitting smokes and gases into the atmosphere. People should buy energy efficient products, use off switch, plant more trees and use public transports instead of personal and drive less and prefer walking and cycling.

In conclusion, over emission of greenhouse gases result global warming, climate change and ozone layer depletion and many more adverse effects in the environment. It is major environmental issues and rules and policies should be made from global levels but start from yourself first.

Thank you Rohan :) and yes we must realize its effects.

Greenhouse gases are constant source of vast problems including ozone layer depletion. We must start from ourselves, rightly written.
