by | 24-11-2015 17:53 recommendations 0

Bandung, is a beautiful Indonesian city known as the Paris of Java due to its beautiful European architecture. Located just 130 kilometers away from Jakarta, this mountainous town with 3 million inhabitants is famous for nurturing future entrepreneurs and creative players locally. In relation to sustainability, Bandung was selected in 2006 as one of the pilot cities for United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and International Environmental Technology Centre?s eco-town project to respond Asia-Pacific environmental issues by thriving to set a good example.

One of Bandung?s most pressing environmental challenges is solid waste. In fact, 1,500 tons per day of solid wastes are dumped with 74% of it going to landfill. Oftentimes, misplacement and mistreatment of trashes caused flooding and other natural instability which causes harm to the society. Bandung has been targeting a reduction of this portion into 30% by 2017 using reduce-reuse-recycle processes and relevant technologies.

Bandung can help lessen negative environmental impacts it could possibly cause by implementing and improving its existing waste management initiatives, such as:

GREENING OF

  • Composting: machines and bins, Takakura method

  • Recycle center: plastics, battery, textile, paper, metal, etc.

  • Underground collection station, waste segregation

    GREENING BY

  • Biodigester: waste-to-energy program

  • Plasma technology (converts organic matter into synthetic electricity)

  • Solar & biomass energy

Moreover, Bandung has also been implementing other socially inclusive programs which increase awareness of its citizen to the environment, such as urban recycling and bike sharing program with stations at many corners of the city. Bandung?s major roads now has special lane for bikers. This is another example of GREENING BY.

Ridwan Kamil, the city?s mayor, is one of the most forward-looking leaders in Indonesia especially in sustainable urban transformation. His vision of Bandung?s Eco-village has been initiated also through roof gardening, urban organic farming, drainage & wastewater treatment, and car free days.
