First Zodiac Excursion
Full of energy and enthusiasm, the expedition members gathered together for the morning briefing. I was about to make my first zodiac excursion and was being instructed as to the safety procedures on board the zodiacs. The zodiacs are 12 feet long vessels armed with powerful Yamaha engines that transported the expedition members from the ship to the continent. I rushed to my room and got dressed. Dressing up for the continent is not an easy task you have to look at the temperature and wind conditions and decide how much you wish to wear. It is fine to wear extra as you can remove clothes once you get hot but wear anything less than required and you shall remember the cold forever. I grabbed all my layers and put them on along with my lifejacket. As I lined up on the side of the ship, I had a rush of adrenaline as I experienced zodiacs moving around the ship in circles. They were powerful machines but did not seem very comfortable. I stepped in the boat alongwith 5 other people and waited for it to start. The zodiac driver cautioned us against leaning over or standing up. The steady hum of the engine became a loud noise as we whirred past the icebergs avoiding them by a large margin for safety.
(To be contd.)
