My Antarctic Expedition – My attempt to save our planet (Part 5)

This is a part of my ?Antarctica Calling? series, a story capturing my journey to Antarctica as a part of 2041, in the toughest leadership course on the planet as I learnt how can we save the only planet we have.

NUMBER 9: FOCUS

It is strange how I can recollect every memory of Antarctica perfectly. It might be because of the stark contrast of the continent from what I have grown up seeing or it is possible that the Antarctic ice got to me, such that a part of it shall remain with me forever. I reiterate one incident that resonates in my mind here:

It had been 20 hours of relentless expedition mode, I had been unable to sleep the previous night as I was camping in the peninsula and it was the farthest thing from comfortable possible. As I entered my room on the ship, I landed face down on my bed appreciating the warmth it offered much alike what a farmer feels on the first rainfall of the season. Hardly had I rested that the PA system announced ?humpback whales sighted?. I rolled over, took a deep breath and dozed off again when the PA system announced, it might be the only time in your life you get to see them. I jumped up putting my gear on with a frenzy I wouldn?t have thought possible and rushed out of the room. As I neared the deck, I stopped in my tracks I had left my camera in my room. How could I afford to lose the opportunity of a picture with the whale. Armed with my camera as I reached the deck, I clenched my fist in anger I had not worn my lifejacket, an accessory without which the crew would not let me depart.

As I analyzed the situation at night, on a comfortable bed but strangely unable to sleep, I repeated the days incidents in my head over and over figuring out why had I made the mistakes. The part of me exhausted prompted me that exhaustion was the key factor and I should leave it at that but I knew different. I was not focused on the right thing. I was anticipating and preparing for a future situation when I was not ready for the present.

As a leader, it is essential that we focus in the correct manner. A lot of people have the opinion that being focused mean filtering out distractions but neuroscience has shown that we focus in different ways, for different purposes drawing on different pathways- some might work when we are in an examination while others tend to stand in opposition. We can group being focused in 3 ways:

Focusing on yourself
Focusing on others
Focusing on the wider world

To be contd?.
