BINS FOR CHANGE

'A society grows great when old men plant trees who's shade they know they shall never sit on.'    - unknown

Every minute the amount of pollution on earth increases. Air, water, land and all other resources we as humans tend to value. There is a lot of preach that we often hear about environmental sustainability but yet only a few dare to act.

"Let us focus more on the urgent issues like starvation and diseases my African counterparts tend to say." But is this really the way to go? Is'nt drought caused by the desertification of vegetation the major cause of starvation in most Sub-Saharan countries. Is it not our polluted air and water that act as a breeding ground for most modern day diseases? The truth of the matter as we sometimes see but tend to ignore. is that the well being of mother-nature has a direct or indirect effect on other social phenomenons we face today.

Speaking of today, what we need today are young people who are willing to take charge of their destinies and instil the change they want to see.

This past weekend (13th of June), JCI Bulawayo in collaboration with other youth organizations launched officially its environmental project Eco-Friendly to a gathered crowd of over 150 attendants.

Project Going Eco-Friendly not only hopes to ensure full utilization of natural resources but also sustainability of resources for the present community and for future generations. This project thus unites the Government, private sector and civic consortium in a drive towards sustaining resources and at the same time bridging the gap between these stake-holders in development work. The project also hopes to raise awareness in the community about environmental conservation and care, leading to sustainability.

Steps to success

The first activity carried out by the team was to collect used metal drums from different industries mostly those dealing with chemical products. Most companies were free to donate these but some came at a cost.

The collected drums were then opened at one end and a metal stand attached to it. The design was then finished off with a metal sheet that acts as a roof from rainwater.

Finally painting and branding was done to give them a more finished attractive look and for preservation purposes.

Companies that donated money to this initiative include Maita Branding (a Bulawayo based company that specializes in branding) British Council Bulawayo and Bookrite Marketing (suppliers of school books and stationary).
