ECO-FRIENDLY CULTURES Part1

by Anthony Emecheta | 06-04-2015 02:04 recommendations 0

Culture is said to be the way of life of a group of people. Culture is a broad term encompassing every sphere of life ranging from the kinds of food we eat, belief system, greeting patterns and so on.

In Nigeria there are so many cultures but the one I'll like us to look at in this report is the Imo Awka festival of the people of Awka in the South Eastern part of Nigeria. Legends have it that during the long era of ravaging communal wars, the "Enwe Awka" (Awka Monkeys) came to inform the local deity of an oncoming onslaught on the people of Awka. The monkeys also told the villagers of the marauders? camp.

This helped the villagers to defeat the raiders. In appreciation, the deity and the monkeys struck a truce that no Awka indigene would ever kill a monkey and that in the event that this happens, the monkey would receive a befitting burial comparable to that of a human being.

Today, the brown monkeys move freely in Awka and sometimes enter residential houses without being disturbed. However, there have been no in-depth studies to verify the number of monkeys or the various species habiting the area. Isn't it wonderful how a legend that made its way into the culture of Awka people has helped to protect the monkey population of the area?

In my next post, I?ll be looking at another culture that has helped to preserve a reptile population and also helped to maintain ecological balance in the area.

Sometimes we think conservation began with us, but we get to hear such amazing stories as yours and discover that in fact, conservation was spearheaded by our ancestors!
It doesn't matter whether they did it based on fact or legend, all that matters is that mother earth was protected as a result.

Thank you for the scoop :-)

Christy am glad you stopped by to read this. Rightly said, our ancestors cherished their environment and I guess that's why the environment worked for them in the area of medication because they consumed mostly herbs in treatment of various illnesses (Don't know about Korean ancestry though :))

Thanks Arushi. Its really interesting but what is more interesting is that this culture and the next I'll post all happen in my home state, Anambra state, south-east of Nigeria.

Eco-Gen its always spirit uplifting when I get your comments on my post. thanks for stopping by.

WOW! What an interesting story of Nigerian culture to protect monkeys as gratitude to them for their role in saving /alarming residents during war. Thanks for sharing , Anthony. I love to know about such cultures prevailing all across the world. Cultures which ultimately link us with and make us love nature or other species of eco-system.Looking forward to your next post.

Thank you for introducing the awesome culture of Nigeria. In a broad view, our ancestors have cherished the nature and regarded it as part of themselves. It would be great if we can bring back the beautiful mind into this generation.
