Dead Whales in NZ |

As an Island nation, the oceans around NZ are essential to the biodiversity of the area. Shockingly, of recent whales have been become stranded at shore!
The Department of Conservation is urging the public to report any dead whales found after last weekend's mass stranding on Farewell Spit, as it seems often people dont do anything about it. (?!) A total 198 whales were first found stranded last Friday. Of those, 66 were finally successfully refloated on Saturday by DOC staff and Project Jonah and other volunteers, and swam away. DOC rangers have tethered 121 dead whales using anchors and rope in the tidal area off Farewell Spit to decompose naturally. 11 whales were still unaccounted for and dead whales could still turn up, including some that might have died since being refloated. "Dead whales could wash ashore on beaches or other coastline around Golden and Tasman bays or may be seen out at sea." However it remains unknown or unclear of the reasons for the stranding. Is there something wrong with how we treat the oceans, or was it a natural occurence?

It's really tragic to know about so many whales dying. I hope authotities get to knwo about the cause soon and take some action to sort out the issue. Thanks for reporting , Alina.

I read about it on a newspaper. It's shocking that released whales coming back again and die.

Rest in peace whales :( It's so sad to watch them lying on the beach not in the ocean. We hope that the reason of the dead whales to be unveiled to stop further disasters in NZ as well as other countries.

Seems not to be natural for so many whales to die. I feel bad for them.
Eco-System that is any fragile suffers badly with these events.
