The struggles of Tunisia after the revolution

by | 30-11-2014 23:17 recommendations 0

The last four years have been a rollarcoaster for the MENA region after the begninning of the Arab Spring with started in the Sidi Bouzid state in Tunisia on December the 17th 2010 and lead to the overthrowing the dictator Zine-Abidine Ben Ali . And between that period of time to now the country seemed to stuggle on its way to democracy and transparency : We have had 3 temporary governments and the first ever free elections on October the 23rd 2011 .

This marked the beginning of the real struggle as the Tunisian people were ideleogically divided into secularists and islamists due to the cultural conflict in the country ( Tunisia grants total equality between the genders and bans polygamy and does not implement sharia law into its rules, it it basically a secular country ) . This division became very deep with the assassination of two politicians in 2012 and the various terrorist attacks launched by extremists after the ban of their political group . I live in the poorest area of Tunisia where most of the terrorist attacks took place in Djbal Al Chaanbi mountain which forced the army to bomb it to keep sure it no longer represents a refugee for the terrorists .

Eventually we were able to pull it off and hold the parliament elections on October the26th this year that had a high rate of participation that exceeded
60% in which the secularist party Nidaa Tunis had the majority of votes, thus taking place of the islamist party El Nahdha , the previous ruling political party . This was followed by the presidential elections this week, and we are still waiting for the second and final round where the two contestans with the highest rate of votes would go head to head to gain the votes of the Tunisian people . Tunisia proved to be on the right track when it comes to freedom and democracy .
