Water crisis in Indonesia, which has abundant water

Clean water crisis hit Indonesia while Indonesia is a country rich. Indonesia has six percent of the world's water supply, or about 21% of the Asia Pacific region's water supply, but in fact from year to year Indonesian clean water crisis.

Indication of clean water crisis can be seen from the water conditions are described based on the quality (quality) and the availability of water and the (volume) of water contained in Indonesia.

Availability and Quality of Water in Indonesia. Availability of water associated with how much water can be utilized as compared to its needs.

Reservoirs become one of the guards availability of clean water

Fresh water, as water, sourced from rainfall which is then deposited on the lake, lake, river, or groundwater basin. Indonesia has more than 500 lakes with lake Toba, as the largest lake which has an area of more than 110 thousand hectares. Water basin in Indonesia is estimated to have a total volume of 308 million cubic meters.

From these data uncontested Indonesia as a country rich in water availability. Unfortunately, the potential availability of clean water from year to year tends to decrease due to the destruction of water catchment areas and environmental pollution are estimated at 15-35% per capita per year. Whereas on the other hand, the propensity to consume clean water rose exponentially.

Water quality with regard to eligibility for the water users for a variety of needs. Water quality is also related to the volume of recovered water and power (self-purification) to receive a certain amount of pollution load. And the feasibility of water, especially for drinking, in Indonesia has reached a threshold that is very alarming.

Overcoming the clean water crisis. Based on the condition of water (quality and availability) in Indonesia, a country rich in potential as the water is not able to prevent Indonesia from clean water crisis. Whenever the dry season arrives various regions experience droughts. Even when the rainy season was still lurking clean water crisis due to a surplus of water that often lead to flooding so that water sources can not be utilized.

Clean water crisis made the most Indonesian people must consume water that should not be potable. United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in its report (2007), mentions, research in various cities in Indonesia showed that nearly 100 percent of our drinking water sources contaminated by E. coli and coliform bacteria.

To address the water crisis marsh saving the environment, including water rescue sources, must be integrated and sustainable manner. Efforts to save the environment in order to overcome the water crisis can be done through:

Promote water saving movement.
Promote tree planting as one man one tree (the tree during its life cycle is capable of producing 250 gallons of water).
Land conservation, preservation of forests and watersheds (DAS).
Construction of rainwater like it, ponds, and reservoirs so that water can be used during the dry season.
Prevent rainwater minimal wasted into the sea by making water infiltration wells or infiltration hole biopori.
Reduce water pollution by both household waste, industrial, agricultural or mining.
Development of desalination technology to process salt water (sea) into fresh water.
And all of it must be done in an integrated, sustainable and as soon as possible unless we really enjoy and take pride in clean water crisis in the water-rich country.
