WATER ISSUES IN NIGERIA

by | 30-11-2014 05:44 recommendations 0

Water issues have been major concerns in the recent time. With increasing population and occupation pf more lands, urbanization and its accompanied more waste production and sewage disposal. It has become necessary for human to devise a means to get drinkable water as the available ware is being contaminated and polluted by its own self.

It is alarming that scientists say that 70% of the earth surface is covered with water but only 2% of this water is drinkable. This is evidence as it is a known fact that the majority of the oceans that form the larger percentage of this water sources are undrinkable.

It has therefore for modern man to find sustainable way of getting water to carry out his daily activities to live and stay health.

Most of the available water in some areas can be used for some domestic and industrial purposes but are not safe for drinking.

Even though most problems (diseases and sickness) that are water related arise as a result of drinking contaminated water unknowingly or even knowingly but without choice. It is therefore necessary and important to direct our attention to how drinkable water is going to be available for everyone.

My solution to supply of drinkable water is more of behavioral than technological.

Behavioral in the sense that in my country (all the place i have travelled to), there is availability of company produced water everywhere. The companies produce water in sachets and plastics. Even though not everyone might be able to afford the buying the plastic ones, i see the solution in making everybody believe they can afford the sachet ones which is sold at $0.6 per bag. A bag contains 20 sachets. An average would finish a bag in a week.

I observed that the problem with majority of Nigerians is their believe that they cannot afford the cost of sachet water. They believe water is naturally available resources which there should be no need for paying for it. However, not every one of them know that this available water is undrinkable except some of them that are literate and some of these educated ones due to their traditional thinking will rather accept this erroneous taboo than buying the company produced water.

Some people argue that they cannot afford the cost of buying these waters. Alas! I can tell you that if their orientations and beliefs that the water available is undrinkable and that to get clean, treated, drinkable water, we need to pay for it. We will considerably reduce the rate of diseases resulting from drinking contaminated water.

This could be backed up from my personal experience. In my second year in the university, the water I was drinking was the available water supplied to the hostels by pipes. I was drinking this water with the notion that why should I be wasting my money buying water when there is water available free of charge in the hostel.

I kept o with this notion till I fell sick. The sickness became so much that it led to repeated convulsion. If not that I was admitted in good hospital, may be I would have died now.

When I recovered, I asked the doctor what could lead to convulsion since I had never experience such thing in my life. His response was it could be as a result too much typhoid in my system, which is a result of drinking unclean water or eating contaminated food.

Since then till now, I have not been drinking water from any tap or borehole but the sachet water I used to believe I could not afford. It is over two years now.

If not that I was sick, I would still be travelling in my journey of ignorance. But do you know how many people that have killed themselves because of this wrong notion? Do you know how many people that have been paralyzed because of the sickness from this wrong notion?

This is why i say my solution to water issues is more of behavioral than technological. The populace needs to be enlightened on the fact that the available water is not drinkable and they need to adopt the culture of buying company produced treated water and that they should see that spending $0.6 on a person in the family per week on water does not hinder their financial plan but rather prevent them from spending unnecessarily on unnecessary sickness.
