Sea Diamond
Everybody was impressed, when the ship ?Costa Concordia? was refloated from the Italian sea in September of 2013 only 20 months after its sunk. This ship is 53 meters long and its refloating cost about 800 million $.
While this event happened in Italy, we are wondering what would happen with the similar sad event in Greece. In April of 2007 the ship, ?Sea Diamond?, was sunk in the coast of the beautiful island, Santorini in Aegean sea (Mediterranean sea). Nearly everyone was rescued, two people known to be missing. After some time, this event got forgotten by the public and almost nobody talks about it.
This ship was never refloated and it is still in the sea. This ship is polluting and has caused many problems to the people and the environment of the adjacent island. Zink, lead, copper and cadmium are only some of the substances that have polluted the local sea.
The ship ?Sea Diamond? (what a sarcastic name) slowly decomposes in the sea, releasing more and more pollutes passing them into the biodiversity of that place. But now, another problem has been revealed, this ship has been sunk in a high slope ground, about 150m deep. This ship must be refloated, immediately because if we don?t act soon, there is a large chance it will fall deeper in the sea shedding more pollutes, and disabling its refloat. According to local people, its refloating will cost about 300$, almost 3 times less than Costa Concordia.
On the other hand, the company that owns that ship, is claiming that it?s refloat is disabled due to the depth of the sea and the structure of the ground beneath it. It has been asked by the authorities of the island, to be made a research and find out whether the ship can be refloated, without yet any result.
The situation is critical and a decision has to be taken before it?s too late. Santorini, is visited by more than 2 million people every year and it can?t stand getting polluted that much. There is a time bomb in one of the most beautiful islands in Greece! We have to act fast!
