Let's protect the elephants!

Acknowledging the fact that violation of the regulations on international ivory trade and elephant hunting are harshly punished by the government, one may assume that these illicit trades will never happen due to the severe punishment. However, ironically, the number of this violation has dramatically increased in recent years. Thus, this means that improvement of outmoded regulations is vital for the protection of animal species that are involved in this illegal trade.

A number of international organizations such as UNEP, CITES, and AEAP (African Elephant Action Plan) are deeply concerned about this issue. In the past, AEAP strengthened the capacity of law enforcement authorities to combat poaching illicit trade. Furthermore, CITE has set up a monitoring system and a commercial ban that are capable of reducing the rate of illegal ivory trade. In spite of the efforts to solve this problem, their attempts were unsuccessful. In July 2012, CITE once stated that elephant poaching and illegal ivory trade have reached unsustainable levels.

There are few additional ways to solve this problem. First of all, we should make people acknowledge the fact that these trades rapidly eradicate some species. This will help the demand of products made by elephants fall. Also, considering the fact that smugglers exchange their contrabands among different countries, the government has to keenly monitor the products that are imported and exported. Moreover, it will be helpful if the government imposes a large amount of tax on these goods so that fewer people are capable of buying them.
