Give A Ghaf Event 2013

"I never heard even one person blaming the heat. Everybody was enjoying, saving the national tree of the UAE."

Goumbook's "Give A Ghaf Campaign" conducted the Seed collection drive today in Green Works nursery, Al Barari Estate, Dubai. Volunteers from all over the UAE came together to collect the seeds which will be used for planting in October 2013.

The Ghaf Tree was declared the national tree of the UAE in 2008. The late H.H. Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the father of the nation, had a great love towards this tree too. Out of 5000 seeds, only 1 survive in the wild but when it is treated properly, there is 70% chance of survival. The Give a Ghaf campaign have been conducting a lot of awareness programs and presently making a documentary in which today's event was also shot.

Students For The Earth was invited to join this great event and also it had more significance to us as it was our first ever outdoor event. We spent a week popularizing this event on social media and getting more people to join the program. More than 25 volunteers represented Students For The Earth at the event which was a record achievement at our first ever event participation.

There was a talk about the ghaf tree by the Goumbook officials in the beginning followed by going to the trees located near the Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road. We spent one hour collecting the pods and filling it in the bags. Then group photos were taken with all the volunteers.

After this we returned to the nursery and all of us joined to take a photo with the Dubai Expo 2020 logo. We were also supporting the bid by collecting seeds of the national tree of the UAE, one of the first ways how the bid was supported environmentally.

Then, we went to a room where we opened the pods and took out the seeds. We selected only the healthy seeds. This process was conducted for an hour.

After this, the event was concluded with a vote of thanks by the organizers, Goumbook and then we all parted, with the hope of coming again to more such environmental events and also to plant them in the future. :)
