Paperless Pause at DPS Sharjah Primary Wing

by Aaditya Singh | 11-06-2013 22:48 recommendations 0

On 5th June 2013, Environment day was  celebrated  as Paperless Day by my school DPS Sharjah, Primary wing. It was marked as a day of complete 'Paper Pause'. Every individual at school, right from the Headmistress, to the supervisors, teachers, administrative staff and even the help staff had consciously decided to actively participate, contribute and promote awareness about conservation of paper.

The challenge was to observe a Paperless Day without deviating from the regular teaching at school. The ground rules were laid and a spate of subject related activities had been meticulously planned to make the day a fruitful one .

The highlights of the day were:

1. An oath to protect and save the Earth was administered by our Headmistress

2. Planting of a regional fruit tree sapling  by the Principal and the Headmistress.

3. Music teachers composed and sang a song on recycling with a message of not using plastic bags.

4. The Administrative staff avoided the usage of paper by shutting down the printer, communicating to teachers and parents through email and telephone only and using ribbons and small writing boards to write messages instead of post it notes.

Some creative activities planned were :

1. Wind chimes: Children made wind chimes with bottle caps

2. Trinklet/tableorganiser: was made out of coconut shells.

3. Wrist band: Wristbands with bottle caps were made.

4. Paper weight : Paperweights were made with yoghurt containers and black eyed beans.

5. Coaster : Coasters made with ice cream sticks and jar cover.

6. Paper Recycling Program : Every child actively participated in the recycling program by bringing newspapers & magazines from home .
A single sheet of paper may seem like an insignificant thing. But the use of thousands of sheets each day can have a huge impact on the environment.

Some alarming facts:

1. Around the world we use around 1 million tons of paper every day.

2. To make 1 ton of paper, 17 thirty year-old trees are killed.

3. The average annual consumption of paper and paperboard per person in the world is 54kg.

4. To manufacture one pound of paper requires three and a half pounds of wood and produces three pounds of carbon dioxide (CO2). Yes, the one that causes Global warming.

5. The paper industry is the third largest source of global warming in the world!

6. Each year forrest terrains the size of Greece disappear forever.

We reiterated the following underlying message for the community:

Paperless day = Less paper Day
Paper-less day = saving energy+ water+ trees+ species + habitat

So, the family of DPS Sharjah paused for a day and thought about the simple ways by which we can reduce the use of paper and dedicated a day towards caring for our planet, Earth.
