World Environment Day... Week... Month... Year... Life

I am posting this one day early but I think when it comes to saving the environment, it is never too early. When I read the theme of the 2013 World Environment Day, I wondered, does it really need to be emphasized. But then statistics show that it really does. I do not want to bore you with numbers and data but it is important to understand that the theme for this year?s World Environment Day celebrations is Think.Eat.Save.- an anti-food waste and food loss campaign that encourages us to reduce our foodprint. Tonnes of food is wasted every year while many people in the world go to bed hungry, young children die daily from hunger.

Apparently about one third of global food production is either wasted or lost.If food is wasted, it means that all the resources and inputs used in the production of all the food are also lost. Wastage of Food thus contributes to depletion of natural resources. This year?s theme – Think.Eat.Save – encourages us to become aware of the environmental impact of our food choices and encourages us to take wise and well informed decisions.

For example, it takes about 1,000 litres of water to produce 1 litre of milk and about 16,000 litres goes into a cow?s food to make a hamburger. This and a lot more  gets wasted when we waste food. I was surprised to note that the global food industry occupies 25% of all habitable land and is responsible for 70% of fresh water consumption, 80% of deforestation, and 30% of greenhouse gas emissions. It is the largest single driver of biodiversity loss and land-use change.

So we need to select foods that have less negative environmental impact, such as organic foods that do not use chemicals in the production process. Choosing to buy locally also means that the food has less food miles, which means that the food has traveled less distance in transportation from production to the consumer, thus using lesser resources.

So friends think before you eat and help save our environment! not just today or tomorrow, but for a lifetime. Let the WED be called WEL- World Environment Life...
