Elephants have existed on this planet for millions of years and only two species remain—the African and the Asian elephant. Now, the world?s largest terrestrial animals are being threatened due to international demand for their tusks.
African elephants are currently found in 37 countries in sub-Saharan Africa. Once reaching 1.3 million African elephants in 1979, there are only an estimated 500,000 - 700,000 left in the world, as a result of the ivory trade.
Asian elephants are found primarily in large parts of India, Sri Lanka, Indochina peninsula, and parts of Indonesia. There are fewer than 50,000 Asian elephants left in the world.
Elephants are killed for their ivory, which is used for crafts, such as carvings, ornaments, combs, jewelry, and chopsticks. Diminishing elephant populations, public outrag,e and fear for the survival of elephants led to an international ivory trade ban in 1989. However, due to the combination of various loopholes and black market trading, the ivory trade is still thriving and threatening our elephant population. In 2011, CITES reported at least 25,000 African elephants were killed.
In 2012, poaching and illegal ivory seizures reached record highs since the international ban in 1989.

We all should take a pledge to shun the purchase of such products. If there is no demand, such actions will fade out in future.

@Czar yea when I come up to our next generation, sometimes I feel scared. We have not much to leave for our children...

Horrific pictures...demand needs to be curtled to resolve the issue.

This is the thing: Do we want to make our children in the future not to see any live elephants? That elephants will only exist in pictures and stories? I don't want that to happen to my child.

@Smriti You got a good point. Actually the elephants' ivory is bought because there is high "Demand" from buyer. If there's nobody who wants to pay for ivory, the people would not kill elephants to get ivory. That's the reason we need do "ethical consumption". :)

Actually one of the reasons of illegal trade is also poverty. That part of world should also be considered in solving the problem. And obviously, other reasons like lack of awareness, improper policies, greed etc. do exist.

Yes, Right you are. We should stop trading of ivory jewels. Elephants are pouching to supply ivory for making beautiful jewels. The jewels seem to be very beautiful but Elephants are killing for this very crucially. :(

Oh, I thought that the jewels are so beautiful but it was made of ivory.. so sad. We need to stop buying luxurious goods if it considerably harms on ecosystem and drives species to extinction.
