PROGESS BEEN MADE ON ISSUES OF CLIMATE CHANGE IN NIGERIA

Climate change is a phenomenon discussed worldwide and my country Nigeria is not immune from it, meaning it is also been affected by climate change. It is known by statistics that 42% of Nigeria Gross domestic product (GDP) is in agriculture making the issue of climate change paramount to the government of Nigeria because climate change also affects agriculture.

As the literal definition of climate change is the general weather condition prevailing in an area which means Nigeria weather condition is been affected for a particular period of time. In other to curb the effect of climate change, the government has been trying it best to ensure the effect of climate change is reduced by carrying out initiatives to ensure the reduction in the effect of climate change.

The government is striving to educate it citizenry on the dangers of climate change most especially the peasant farmers in the rural areas who need to be well informed. A public campaign is also been carried out on climate change to educate the citizens on their expectations, particularly in the area of adaptation and mitigation.

One fantastic initative by the Nigerian government to curb the effect of climate change and also to ensure educating the citizens is the introduction of a graduate programme on climate change issues to two universities under the agies of the German initative on the west African science service on climate change and adaptive land use. The two institutions are the Federal University of Technology, Akure, Federal university of Technology minna.

Nigeria has collaborated with ECOWAS (Economics Community of West Africa State) to develop African climate change adaptation strategy including the development of appropriate actions plans via ECOWAS as well as raising of Eco funds.

Above I have featured some the progress my dear country Nigeria has made concerning the issues of climate change and I am also optimistic that there will be more progress.
