Water pollution due to disposal of waste in the Dande River |
---|
Siddharthanagar is one of the municipality among two municipalities in the Rupandehi district of Nepal. It is the gateway of the birthplace of Lord Buddha, Lumbini. The solid waste of this area is managed by the municipality through collection by its different units and it is disposed in the riverbank near Dande River. The unmanaged disposal of the wastes has caused different impacts in the environment as well as the health of the nearby living people. All the wastes both bio-degradable and non degradable are placed in the same place without any separation and totally disposed in the disposal site. Due to this the degradable wastes are degraded and they began to flow in the nearby river as effluents when rainfall occurs and increased the nutrient matter in the river. The accumulation of the maximum nutrient in the river caused the excessive growth of the aquatic plants and hence eutrophication , thereby increasing the biological oxygen demand. The life cycle of the aquatic animals is thus affected. The river is now completely covered with the aquatic plants and the aquatic ecosystem has been badly affected. These all has contributed to the water pollution in the river and has made the water unsuitable for any purposes such as feeding to animals, for cleanliness and even not fit for the irrigation purpose. So, the local authority should be concerned with this problem and should properly managed the degraded and non-degraded wastes separately and should seek the alternative place for the disposal as it has caused much more impact in the river and also the livelihood of those associated with the river and water ecosystem. |

Proper cleaning of rivers is of paramount importance. Disposing of waste in the river must be contained at all costs.

Thank you for sharing. Nepal is full of interesting story about gods and goddess.
I hope the river with beautiful myth to get its original beauty via proper regulation and cleaning up campaigns.
