EEG's Neighbourhood Recycling Campaign 2014 |

Emirates Environmental Group , the leading organization in promoting the recycling culture throughout the UAE holds a plethora of recyclingcampaigns throughout the year. Working with all sectors of society public and private organizations, academic intitutions and families, EEG works towards a greener future for the UAE.
EEG has formulated short and valuable programs that give the students an opportunity to actively participate in EEG?s summer programs and provide a platform to show their enthusiasm and also fulfill their responsibility towards the country they live in. To that end, EEG rolled out ?The Neighborhood Recycling Project 2014?. This initiative was started four years ago, so as to give the student community an opportunity, to involve the people in their neighborhood, to start their own recycling initiative under the proper guidance of EEG. More than 25 years ago, our scientists started warning us about climatic change and informed us about global warming. However, even after all this caution, our world leaders ignored this warning. They considered it to be too petty for their area of concern. Even though it is too late for us to prevent global warming, we are at a point where we can prevent it from becoming a calamity. The need of the hour is to ACT. Everyone needs to contribute towards saving our planet in their own way. I played a small role by participating in the Neighborhood Recycling Project organized by EEG. To start with, I made a flyer that focused on recycle and reuse of waste newspapers and used batteries. The whole process of studying about toxic materials that harm our environment made a major impact on me. I vowed that I will always follow DOs and DON?Ts to save our environment from global warming. Once I got confirmation from EEG, I distributed the flyers in my neighbourhood and amongst my friends. The following week, I received a positive feedback on my email. To my utter astonishment, I collected more than 45 kg of wastepapers in the first two days itself and 12 Kgs used battery in the next week. This gave me a lot of confidence. I became hopeful of collecting 500 kgs of wastepapers and 20 kgs battery within my target period. I collected 530 kg of wastepapers and 69 Kgs battery. I also won the highest collector of batteries certificate. Neighbourhood Recycling Project by EEG was a unique & a great learning experience for me. I feel contented that this effort would save at least a few trees from being cut and would save some watts of energy from getting depleted.

Excellent work, Manav! I too am involved with the EEG Recycle Drive, but on a smaller scale. I basically contribute to all categories with slightly lower weights and I haven't been able to become a Top Contributor because of the outstanding work you people are doing!.

Thanks for the report, Manav. I'm participating in EEG's neighbourhood recycling project since past 3 years & with my efforts I'm able to secure a place among Top collectors' every time.
This time I achieved Top Collector in Mobile Category.
This is huge motivation for others as well. Thanks to EEG for providing such platforms to encourage students & other people of UAE.

I think we can agree that EEG practises what it preaches-"Together For A Better Environment" as you added that numerous student members participated in the campaign making it a fruitful one. EEG is an ideal example of the role of NGOs in spreading environmental awareness.Congrats on collecting 1000 kgs of paper. Thanks for your commendable words:)

Thanks for sharing your experience of EEG's neighbourhood recycling project. I collected 1000 kg paper this time . So many students( I know from Dubai & Shj) are participating in such projects of EEG which clearly shows how much EEG is doing to inculcate environment awareness among we the students. Good job , Manav with 530 Kg paper . Congrats for being the highest collector of batteries.

Agreed with you She Mei Tan. Many manufacturers today send their recyclable waste to third world countries like India and Pakistan in order to get monetary returns. In fact, I have seen such cases in the UAE. In EEG's case, they use recyclable materials collected by student members, such as wastepapers, to make publications (free-of-cost) on topics of environmental conservation. The entire agenda of the campaign is to promote green practices at homes,schools,etc. Thanks She Mei Tan for your valuble comment:)

Good to know about your initiative Manav. I've done similar initiative as you particularly on E-waste collection in my own university campus in Malaysia. I personally think that proper e-waste disposal in my country is not being carried out in a sustainable way. Most of the metal recyclers will extract whatever profitable for them and scrap off other hazardous components irresponsibly. In fact, other countries even send their e-waste to third world country for disposal. Our initiative in promoting sustainable e-waste recycling particularly to those producers is important. Keep up your good spirit!
