Good governance

In this concept, I intend to provide the details on how ''good governance'' brings in societal balance thereby leading to living in harmony with the nature.

I have had the privilege to present this research paper during the Indo-Bhutan International Conference on "The Changing Social Paradigm and GNH". The topic of my paper was Good Governance: An outlook into the societal development in Bhutan. An excerpt from the abstract is given below, the proceedings of which you can download from the website address provided.

Abstract

Human civilization have brought over substantial changes. Through various  changes and significance that human civilization have brought about, forms of government and the rule of law are two of the most important influences in social, economic and political development. However, with what we might regard as a boon of civilization, attributions as such have seeded atrocities and a holier-than-thou perceptions. This has led to an increase in the corruption, vicious circle of poverty, and challenges towards human development. This leads us to another important prerequisite for human development, designation towards good governance. Good governance has hence become a vital tool for the societal development in a whole.  This paper focuses on the role of good governance and how good governance contributes to some of the important human development indicators namely building knowledge based society, quantifying happiness and empowering people?s participation in society?s development.

Keywords: Governance, rule of law, poverty, human development, happiness.

@Jekk The paper focuses on one important concept known as Gross National Happiness, an alternative development philosophy that focuses on Gross National Happiness rather than Gross Domestic Product. It primarily critics the way that Gross Domestic Product has ripple effect of tyranny in the system we are living.

It is a philosophy/theory of development build on these four pillars: (a) Sustainable development, (b) Preservation of Culture (c) Preservation and promotion of culture and (d) Good governance.

And my paper is based on the fourth pillar - Good Governance that I feel is a prime requisite for all the other three pillars. With the rise in the differences in the governance and the different theories for development, politics has never been easy for the people. The central theme of the paper is hence developed in this philosophy of Good Governance, the third pillar of development.

The paper goes on providing highlights of the importance of good governance - the primary being the Poverty Eradication and Sustainable Development. The sociology of human development by thinkers such as Jurgen Habermas has also been covered in the paper.

The end note is that for development to be successful, it needs to be sustained, balanced and equitable in the society. And all this is possible through a judicious law is inherent in the system.
