Tumpek Wariga, Balinese Traditional Ceremony for Plants and Trees

Nothing is more comfortable and peaceful than taking a rest under a dense tree especially in a hot shining day. Trees or plants are the breath of earth, and people should be grateful of their oxygen, fruits, leaves, steam, bark and their cool breeze. They are our friends and food source. Their life is our survival they give sense of harmony on earth. Hence, they deserve to gain our attention and be preserved.

Balinese have a special ceremony to beg any prosperity for plants and trees so they can always provide their crops for mankind. Last Saturday, Balinese celebrated Tumpek Wariga. It is the day when a blessing ceremony is given to the plants. The ceremony held at every plantation and farm throughout the island. Tumpek Wariga is celebrated every 210 days or 6 months of the Balinese calendar. This day serves as a remainder of the importance of trees for Balinese's life and also serves as a message for the Balinese to preserve the tree.

The other name of Tumpek Wariga is Tumpek Bubuh since there is bubuh (porridge made from rice flour) included in the offerings that's dedicated to God Sangkara, the God of vegetation. In the ceremony, the bubuh is smeared on the tree bark as a symbol of fertilizers (the proper food for vegetation). The unique of this ritual which Balinese give an instruction to the trees, they will tap the tree three times to wake it up and give a remainder that is 25 days left for "Galungan" Ceremony so that please produce a lot of fruits.

Do you have this kind of day in your country? Please share to the world then.

Hi Wulan- Tumpek Wariga sounds very interesting! We too have harvest festivals where all the gods and goddesses are offered the freshly harvested crop. We even worship the field in which the crop is grown. This sounds sort of similar. Though I have been to Bali I missed this festival. It would have been really interesting to watch. Thanks for sharing!

Tumpek Wariga- Oh so interesting. We don't have day/occasion of this sort here. Glad to know this from you. Plants and Trees are lifelines of earth and entire eco system so they deserve respect /prayers actually always but at least on such dedicated days. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Wulan - Tumpek Wariga is unique in the sense, blessing ceremony given to the plants. I haven't heard similar practices in my country though they may probably be practiced in other parts of y country. But yeah I know of a ritual in which we worship before storing rice after harvesting :)
