CLIMATE CHANGE AND ITS IMPACT IN AGRICULTURAL CROP PRODUCTION

Agriculture and fisheries are highly dependent on specific climate conditions. Trying to understand the overall effect of climate change on our food supply can be difficult. Increases in temperature and carbon dioxide (CO2) can be beneficial for some crops in some places. But to realize these benefits, nutrient levels, soil moisture, water availability, and other conditions must also be met. Changes in the frequency and severity of droughts and floods could pose challenges for farmers and ranchers. Meanwhile, warmer water temperatures are likely to cause the habitat ranges of many fish and shellfish species to shift, which could disrupt ecosystems. Overall, climate change could make it more difficult to grow crops, raise animals, and catch fish in the same ways and same places as we have done in the past. The effects of climate change also need to be considered along with other evolving factors that affect agricultural production, such as changes in farming practices and technology. Changes in temperature, amount of carbon dioxide (CO2), and the frequency and intensity of extreme weather could have significant impacts on crop yields.

 

 1.      Warmer temperatures may make many crops grow more quickly, but warmer temperatures could also reduce yields. Crops tend to grow faster in warmer conditions. However, for some crops (such as grains), faster growth reduces the amount of time that seeds have to grow and mature. This can reduce yields (i.e., the amount of crop produced from a given amount of land).

2.      For any particular crop, the effect of increased temperature will depend on the crop's optimal temperature for growth and reproduction.  In some areas, warming may benefit the types of crops that are typically planted there. However, if warming exceeds a crop's optimum temperature, yields can decline.

3.      Higher CO2 levels can increase yields. The yields for some crops, like wheat and soybeans, could increase by 30% or more under a doubling of CO2 concentrations. The yields for other crops, such as corn, exhibit a much smaller response (less than 10% increase).  However, some factors may counteract these potential increases in yield. For example, if temperature exceeds a crop's optimal level or if sufficient water and nutrients are not available, yield increases may be reduced or reversed.

4.      More extreme temperature and precipitation can prevent crops from growing. Extreme events, especially floods and droughts, can harm crops and reduce yields.

5.      Dealing with drought could become a challenge in areas where summer temperatures are projected to increase and precipitation is projected to decrease. As water supplies are reduced, it may be more difficult to meet water demands.

6.      Many weeds, pests and fungi thrive under warmer temperatures, wetter climates, and increased CO2 levels. The ranges of weeds and pests are likely to expand northward. This would cause new problems for farmers' crops previously unexposed to these species. Moreover, increased use of pesticides and fungicides may negatively affect human health.

However, agriculture is itself responsible for an estimated one third of climate change. It is generally agreed that about 25% of carbon dioxide emissions, are produced by agricultural sources, mainly deforestation, the use of fossil fuel-based fertilizers, and the burning of biomass. Most of the methane in the atmosphere comes from domestic ruminants, forest fires, wetland rice cultivation and waste products, while conventional tillage and fertilizer use account for 70% of the nitrous oxides. According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the three main causes of the increase in greenhouse gases observed over the past 250 years have been fossil fuels, land use, and agriculture.

    Thanks for detailing the way by which higher temperatures or other climate change attributes can damage crops. There is no doubt that Climate change is a serious threat to every industry , every segment , every nation and every economy but the most serious and largely impacted are seen to be crops which eventually create food shortage and other serious consequences.

    Climate change is burning issue. Its impact is seen in every field. Of course its more impact has seen in Agriculture. In my previous article I have mentioned about Shitting Rainfall Pattern in Nepal. Similarly many experiments shows that production of agricultural crops ultimately decline due to green house effect, soil erosion and disease infestation. Altogether it has negative impact.     Climate change is affecting each and every aspect of our environment.Agriculture is affected too which might result in food insecurity.Increased temperatures can help higher productivity of crops,but others factors like carbon dioxide concentration also play a role.Overall,climate change is having a negative impact on our environment and some action has to be taken to combat it.Thanks for the report.

    Thank you Sandhya, Impact of climate change is more serious in country like Nepal where most of the people depend on agriculture production and the subsistence type. As you mentioned above Agroforestry system could be the best possible way to mitigate impact of climate change. But it requires technical knowledge like to incorporate tree with agro crops.

    yeah..global warming has lots of harmful impacts on agriculture.. further,whenever there is heavy rainfall,soil becomes acidic as the basic cations present on the soil gets leached away..and excess hight temp beyond 40 degree results in more insect pest attack with increased transpiration and decreased respiration...as mentioned earlier in my article,agroforestry could be the solution as it helps in soil ph maintainance and provides shading effect as well.. And the next option could be green house/plastic house cultivation.. whatever,there are lots of solution to the existing problems but the problem again arises in acceptance and implementation of the solution....anyways,nice article dinesh..keep sharing
