PRE EXPEDITION: BE ORGANIZED

The International Antarctic Expedition was a 2 week long learning experience for me. Over the next few weeks I shall be sharing my leadership learnings in Antarctica. Here is how I learnt about the first. A lesson whose importance I would remind myself each day of the expedition.

As I finally reached my room, I unpacked my luggage and created an inventory. Proper clothing is a crucial factor for survival in Antarctica. Everyone wears several layers that serve a number of purposes ranging from providing warmth to being waterproof.

It is at this moment that I realized the importance of being organized, one missing piece of clothing or equipment could delay me by several minutes, or worse it could be the difference between life and death in certain situations. In an expedition where I was responsible not only for my but my whole teams experience it was imperative that I was to be organized.

If I relate this to my daily life, it is funny how much time we waste looking for things or locating the right information. If only we were organized this would save us several crucial minutes which could be used for constructive purposes. While I realized its importance in Antarctica, it still serves as one of my greatest lessons from the white continent.
