The capital of Bhutan, the Thimphu is one of the fast growing cities in the country, with a maximum number of the population being residing which resulted in more number of cars. Despite government impose a tax onBhutan Broadcasting Service importing cars and green tax on fuel the number of cars has been increasing drastically. Now the only option left is to improve safe, reliable, and regular public transportation. With the government receive USD 4.6Million the city cooperation of Thimphu will upgrade 77 bus stops and 18 buses. Currently, there are of 105 bus stops with the simply open ground with a sign post and it is connected by only 34buses. Those identified places will resemble those of developed country with shelters with seating for at least five people. It will make more accessible and friendly to pedestrians. The support received from World Bank will also cover the development of bus control system consisting of Global Positioning System monitoring and centralized data control system. In order to attract more people to switch from private to public transport, they are planning to install internet services in the buses. The project will start from next year July and are aiming to complete by 2018. The World Bank has also committed 3.8million USD to mitigate the climate change in Bhutan. My heartfelt gratitude goes to World Bank for your continuous support and generous contribution to a vulnerable country like Bhutan. Source: Bhutan Kuensel |
