Energy is one of the important things that needs to be conserved in the modern era. There are various international and national organizations doings diiferent activities to bring the message of conservation to the people. But, the future descision makers, students, are not getting the chance to interact with the public about conserving the environment.

A group of 20 students and two teachers decided that they needed to make a difference and planned to host an awareness event in one of the prominent places in their town. The students who were keen supporters of the environment club of Our Own English High School, Sharjah (Boys) came together on the 31st March 2012 at Mega Mall to spread the message of conservation. The event was also supported by Dubai Dolphinarium.

The club hosted a variety of events in the place. All the children were invited to colour pictures of the earth and all were awarded prizes. The parents also were quizzed on various topics based on the environment of the UAE and the world. All the winners walked away with valuable vouchers by Mega Mall. The students also created book marks from recycled carton boxes and distributed them to all the visitors of the event and the visitors were amazed at the amount of creativity shown by the students in the variety of designs of the bookmarks. Another highlight of the event was a big message board where the visitors could post messages of what they would do to save planet earth in their mother tongue. A variety of languages were seen at the end of the show from English to Arabic to Malayalam, etc. A group of students also made an environmental movie which was played throughout the show.

"This event was successful than we expected and we were thrilled to pass the awareness that we got to other people who did not know it. Nobody likes boring lectures on environment. So, we bought fun filled activities to increase the awareness," quoted George Zacharia, the secretary of the club. The event was also attended by the headmaster and supervisors of the school and all of them commended the good work done by the students. "We are indeed pleased and honoured to conduct such an event and we hope we get more chances like these," quoted Mrs. Arti, the co-ordinator during the program. Mrs. Nirmala co-ordinated all the volunteers to bring out the overall result effciently. The club has taken part in various recycling drives and competitions. This event was part of the club's new initative to reach the community. It has also started a facebook page (www.facebook.com/ourownecoclub) and a website (www.ourownboysecoclub.weebly.com) .
