As the awareness of the usage of the limited fossil fuels and their negative impacts on the environment is increasing by the day, the world is shifting towards renewable energy sources such as solar energy, wind energy, hydro power. etc. Thus the usage of renewable energy has increased both in the developed and developing countries. According to REN21?s Renewable 2014 Global Status Report, the portion of renewable energy consumption compared to total global energy consumption increased from 16.7% in 2012 to 19% in 2012. Keeping up with the global trend, Bangladesh too has emphasized on the importance of the development of renewable energy through the following measures:
- National plans: The Bangladeshi government has included increasing the production of renewable energy in the National Plans such as the Five Year Plan, Power System Master Plan. Renewable energy was also highlighted in policy documents such as the National Energy Policy and the Industrial Policy 2010.
- In the Bangladesh Climate Change and Action Plan, renewable energy development has been identified in several programs.
- Renewable energy options have been added to the Bangladesh National Building Code.
- Development of a dedicated policy ?Renewable Energy Policy of Bangladesh?, which has been enforced since the year 2009. The policy aims to generate about 5% of power for renewable energy sources in 2015 and 10% by the year 2020.
- The government has also established Sustainable and Renewable Energy Development Authority (SREDA) to promote the usage of renewable energy and energy efficiency.
- Bangladesh was also one of the initial members of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), the only inter-governmental agency working exclusively on renewable energy.
The endeavors above reflect Bangladesh's commitment towards the development of renewable energy. As of now, Bangladesh is still far behind in the renewable energy sector compared to other Asian countries or even neighboring countries such as India and Pakistan, but the government has taken stringent measures to fill up this gap in the coming years.
